Musical Style: Rock, Progressive Rock, Rock Fusion, Psychedelic rock

Musical Influences: Wayne Krantz, John Scofield, Mike Stern, Vinnie Colaiuta, Mahavishnu Orechestra, Led Zeppelin

Musical Inspiration: Listening to NYC jazz fusion music of the 80s and 90s brings forth a grit to jazz that is also catchy like in popular music but with the edge of NYC. Kris Myers and I discussed the track on a car ride from a gig the night before in how we wanted to compose this song together. Kris and I both have vast love for jazz musicians and the music of NYC and we wanted to express that in this song. In addition, our time performing in past projects and records has led to this moment in our compositional explorations.

Artist Statement: Kyoto Cocktail is a true live recording session with all musicians in the same room recorded to an 8 track analog machine, encompassing the sonic grit and edge of a NYC dive bar live show. Instrumentally rich melodic, harmonic, and rythmic latitudes, the arrangement takes you on a journey through orgasmic layers of sub-sonic bass, soaring organ pads, syncopated sophisticalted drumming uniquely to kris myers, and virtuosically complex yet tastefully expressed guitar work from Marcus Rezak. The compositon made by Rezak and Myers, joined on the recording session by Tyler Adams on organ and Chris Duffy on bass made for a special musical concotion. This track is a relection of the influence Kris and I both had in musical school at Berklee College of Music and DePaul University, and 50 years of combined touring between the two of us, and our gratitude to the amazing musicians who laid the groundwork for us to follow.

Track Description: “Kyoto Cocktail” by Marcus Rezak and Kris Myers encompasses the sonic grit and edginess of a live performance in a New York City dive bar. During a car ride to a gig the night before the session at Color Red Studios, the two discussed their mutual love for fusion music coming out of NYC in the 80s and 90s. This particular era possessed a paradoxical combination of rawness and commercial catchiness that Rezak and Myers sought to capture through both production and composition in the studio. Rezak’s virtuosic, yet tastefully expressive guitar work and Myers’ signature style of syncopated and sophisticated drumming are accompanied by Tyler Adams’ (The Jauntee) soaring organ pads and Chris Duffy’s (Magic Beans) subsonic bass. The track is an exploration of rich melodies and rhythmic latitude that encompasses Rezak and Myers’ pedigree through both cutting their teeth at Berklee College of Music and a combined 50 years of touring between the two of them. Like its namesake derived from the suave and worldly mixed drink, “Kyoto Cocktail” is a concoction of a fruitful 15-year collaborative history between two of the most highly regarded and multifaceted musicians on the modern touring circuit.
